SGN 8 client won't install Surface Pro 4 Win10 Pro

I've tried many variations to get this installed on a fairly new Surface Pro 4.  Ensured all win updates installed.  SGxClientPreinstall loads fine but I get the error below when running SGNClient_x64.  I've also installed vcredist14_x86 to no avail.  The mentioned KB2999226 doesn't apply to Windows 10 per MS site (is for windows version prior to Win10).  Any help greatly appreciated as I've spent alot of time troubleshooting this...no problems installing on other Surface Pro 4 systems at same customer location.

    Hello John,

Sorry to hear you're having this issue, I've seen this happen a few times on systems that's aren't updated regularly with Windows Updates.

Please follow the instructions below, ensuring that you download the correct files that are applicable to your Operating System:

    1. Download the March 2014 servicing stack update from https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2919442
    2. Install Windows8.1-KB2919442-x64.msu
    3. Download all the files from the April 2014 update https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2919355
    4. Run clearcompressionflag.exe (please note: there is no output when running this file)
    5. Install the following updates:
              Windows 8.1-KB2919355-x64.msu
              Windows 8.1-KB2932046-x64.msu
              Windows 8.1-KB2959977-x64.msu
              Windows 8.1-KB2937592-x64.msu
              Windows 8.1-KB2938439-x64.msu
              Windows 8.1-KB2934018-x64.msu
    11. Download the Update for Universal C Runtime in Windows from https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2999226
    12. Install Windows 8.1-KB2999226.msu

You should now be able to install the vcredist14_x86.exe from the SGN8 installation media under the folder Installers/3rd Party.
Now reboot the machine if you have not done so already.

The installation of SafeGuard Enterprise 8 should now complete successfully, but please let me know if you encounter any further problems.

  • Hi, these steps didn't work.  Unfortunately all the files above are for win 8.1 so this Win10 Pro system gave an error stating "this update does not applicable to this pc".

Still unable to install the SGNx64 client.

Hi John, that's just the naming convention Microsoft use, when you look up each one of the updates you'll find one applicable to Windows 10 (for some reason they all download as Windows 8.1).
If you're getting an error about the update not being right for your system make sure it is for Windows 10 (and 64bit/32bit as appropriate)

  • Hi, I understand your position but there is no win10 version to download in each those links.

    Hey John,

Typically you only need to follow those instructions if your device has not been updated with all Windows Updates prior to the install.

  • Hi Toby, I wanted to provide resolution steps used for this issue as I was unable to get past the error on this Win10 system.  I noted current installed programs and user settings then reset the system using settings > recovery > reset "retaining user data" (removes all programs) > installed all win updates > installed SGN8 client, which installed as expected.  Reinstalled user programs and some user settings that were also removed, i.e. outlook signature, custom dictionary file used by ms office, chrome bookmarks backup.

One other item I found with Surface Pro 4 is the pro-installer vbs script provided didn't allow for proper SGN8 client connection to server > found you have to manually import the SSL certificate on the pc to the appropriate certificate stores > sgn8 then would properly synchronize.

    Thanks for your assistance.
