Then it does not matter on which hardware or virtual platform the operating system is running?

That is correct. As long as you are on a supported OS with enough resources it should be fine. 

It should be noted that officially, we only support VMWare VM's (only workstation solutions, not ESXi), not Virtual Box or Hyper-V.
