Safeguard Recovery not an option ?

Hi,

Safe guard is installed on my laptop but my laptop is never connected to the network where help desk can retrieve the required files to provide me with the recovery code.

So, today morning when I started my laptop, safeguard login screen displayed with the option to recover.  When I called help desk of my company, they mentioned their inability to provide the passcode.

What are my options at this point ? short of re-imaging.

Any help in this regard will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Sanjay

  • Hi Sanjay,

Chances are that if your machine has not contacted the Safeguard server to upload the boot key (which is required to do any recovery, whether it be slaving the drive, or doing a virtual client, your options are going to be fairly limited.

I would check with your Safeguard administrator to search for your username in the Safeguard management center, and click on the "Keys" tab. If you have a key assigned there, should read "Boot_XXXXXXX" (referencing your machine name), then you should be able to either do a Challenge/response to unlock, and if not, then do a virtual client to unlock the drive to retrieve files, or a drive slave.

If the Boot key is not listed there, you will need to simply re-image the machine.

  • Thanks so much for this info Paul.
I think reimaging may be the only option based on my situation. As a last resort can the laptop be booted using external media ? When the Os will be loaded by an admin account then perhaps we can disable the Sophos encryption ?

    Thanks again

    Sanjay
  • You can boot to external media, but you won't be able to uninstall Safeguard. You'd be better off simply pulling the drive out and slaving it to another machine to get any data you may need and re-imaging the machine.

  • Ok. So, pulling out drive is possible only after booting to external media correct ?
I am thinking since the drive is encrypted, we need to load the OS through external media and then pull out the drive.

    Thanks again.

  • Hi Paul,

I just wanted to thank you for you tips.  Since the Safeguard never connected to the server, the device encryption never took place.  Hence, I was able to pull out my hard drive and slave it to another computer to recover all the data.

I then re-imaged it and put the data back on my drive.

    Thanks agan.
