sophos safeguard file based encrytion

We are trying out  Sohos safegurad encrptyion for encrpyting files in our shares.

But we are facing a issue where files are not automatically encrypted.

This is the situtation we have two machines A nd B

A is a windows 7 machine with sophos safeguard client installed on it .

B is a windows 2012 machine which has network shares and has no sophos safeguard client installed on it.

when user copies files from machines A to the network share files are automatically encrypted.

But when files are copied from machine B into the share the files are not automatically encrypted.

when i check the encrytion state it says file is not encrypted however there is a rule defined for it.

  • Hi,

The files will be encrypted and decrypted at the client side. That way if anyone is monitoring the connection they wont recieve any unencrypted data.

If the Windows 2012 machine does not have the client installed it wont be able to read the encrypted files stored in the share, nor will any files copied to the location be encrypted.

    Hopfully this helps!

  • Hi Simon,

What has the reply you have made got to do anything with the issue I have.Have you read my issue?

Besides you can install Sophos Safeguard client only on windows 8 and windows 7

My issue is that when the files are not getting encrypted automatically when files are copied from a  server/PC which does not have a client installed.

  • Hi rakeshmole,

as Simon already mentioned, the actual encryption process of the files will be performed on the client side where the SafeGuard Enterprise File Encryption Client is installed. The client computer evaluates the network share where you want to copy a file to, if an encryption policy applies on that network share, the files will be encrypted on the client and will be transfered to the network share afterwards.

If you are now trying to copy a file to a network share, where an encryption rule is defined but you dont have the SafeGuard Enterprise File Encryption Client installed, files can of course not be encrypted before you copy them over.

    Best Regards,
