Server Communication Module Is Not Running. Network Down? error message on a Mac

We've been seeing this error message when trying to run sgadmin --synchronize:

Failed to synchronize with SGN server! Reason: server communication module is not running. Network down?

This seems to only happen when the Mac has uptime of at least a day. A reboot seems to reset the communication module, but it would be great to figure out why it's happening.
