Uninstalling Sophos SafeGuard 5.50.8

Hi,

Bear with me as I'm a newbie and not of an IT background, although I am reasonably IT literate :smileyhappy:

I have Sophos SafeGuard 5.50.8 installed on my work's laptop and this has been fine for 12 months but for the past couple of months it does not recognise my usual User Name, Password & Domain when signing in. It's usually the password that it doesn't like, which always results in a 'Challenge / Response' with my IT provider on the server. This started off every so often but is now happening daily. As a result, I cannot switch the laptop off overnight at the moment otherwise I have to ensure my IT guy is available early the next morning to complete the 'response' following my 'challenge'. You can probably appreciate that this is very frustrating and all I want to do is uninstall Sophos, which leads me to:

1) Is there anyway to fix this problem ? I am not sure how I find what version of Sophos SafeGuard 5.50.8 I'm using and whether I need to run an update ? Does this need to be run on the server or my local machine ?

2) How do I remove Sophos SafeGuard 5.50.8 and are there any complications or things I need to know before removing ?

Thanks in anticipation

Phil

  • Sounds like your AD password might have changed and the change is not sync'ed with SGE.  I have had varied success getting the passwords to sync up.  I am told that you need to change the password in windows, perform a synchronization and then the password will be matched to the POA.

Getting Sophos off the machine is more challenging ... your IT people will need to apply a policy to your machine that will allow you to decrypt the drives AND allow you to uninstall the software.

Once the first policy is applied, you can right click on the drive in mt computer and the encryption option will have a "decrypt" choice - do this for all drives that have a green key on them.

After they have been decrypted, and you've received a policy that allows you to uninstall the software, you can then just remove each Sophos option via Add/Remove programs.

  • HELP!  Im running a version (limited release in the US to ING financial reps) of Safeguard that is only installed locally (ie, no management center, no policy editor, no IT guy to change a policy to allow me to decrypt a drive, or uninstall from control panel).

Does anyone have any ideas for me on how to accomplish this in light of that challenge?

I need to uninstall Sophos completely so that I can use a different encryption software.  I am pretty confident that I need to decrypt the drive first before removing Sophos via control panel.  It seems like removing before decrypting would render my drive unreadable and worthless (unless I did a complete rebuild from scratch and used a backed up drive, which I dont want to have to take the time to do if not necessary.  On top of that, would the backed up drive be encrypted too???).

    Thanks,

    Paul

  • Hi Paul,

Removing SafeGuard, with the ING package, is very straight forward. Just uninstall the software from the control panel in the following order:

    1) Uninstall the client configuration package

    2) Uninstall the SafeGuard client (at this point all encrypted drives will be automatically decrypted - this could take a few hours)

    3) Uninstall the Pre-install.

No need to change any policies. If you run into any issues just let us know either through these forums, a phone call (1-888-Sophos-9) or by email (support@sophos.com).

  • Thanks Ryan.  Straightforward solution.  I just didnt want to proceed without knowledge and lock up my machine again.  Solution worked.
