Uninstall SafeGuard hangs

Hello everyone,

I have this laptop that a friend gave me. It has SafeGuard Easy 4.50.3 installed, but I currently don't have any use for disk encryption. He also gave me the username and password, and told me he need the data that's in there.

I downloaded the correspondig .iso file to uninstall via CD, since he cannot remember the WinXP password, and I went ahead and started the unistall process.

Right now it's stuck at 24%, and has been so since more than 24 hrs.

My question is: if I interrupt the uninstall process (reset laptop), will I lose the data that's in there? Will I be able to restart the uninstall process once the laptop has been rebooted?

The only thing that seems to still be going on is the timer, but it's going to take more than 99 hrs. It's already been 47 hrs, and still in 24%.

Any help would be appreciated.

    a common root cause for stuck emergency decryptions is a physically defective harddisk.

    SGEASY.exe (DOS version from the Recovery Tools CD) provides a functionality called 'emergency decryption', which allows the rollback of an interrupted initial encryption or the continuation of an interrupted final en/decryption on DOS level.
    I'd suggest to try to reboot the machine and start SGEasy.exe using the /ED parameter.

    After a successfull rollback of the decryption status, use the WinPE with integrated SafeGuard Easy tools (from Knowledge Base Articel 66019 - How to use the WinPE CD with integrated SafeGuard Easy logon tool) to gain access to the encrypted disk and recover data from it, rather then decrypting the whole disk using the SafeGuard Easy Emergency Tools.


    Side note: I'd recommend to replace the harddisk if you plan to continue to use the disk afterwards or at least make sure to check the disk for defective sectors.
