Sophos startup error

Hello,

I have installed Sophos Safeguard 6.0 Enterprise on a new Dell laptop. When the system reboots I get a Sophos is starting... then get a bunch of errors and then get a Halted and the system wlll not boot. I am new to this software and not sure how to get the system working again. My question is, 1. How can I get the system to boot and 2. If I just completely re-install windows again and format the drive will Sophos be completely removed where I can boot the system again with out any problems. I would like to be able to figure out why this error is happening but  more importantly get the system to boot. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

  • One more thing to add, I did build a Winpe boot disk and added SGNRollback.exe to the boot. I was able to get to the exe however I am not sure I am using the correct syntax when launching the exe... I was using -drv d:\SGNRollback.exe and nothing happened... this does not seem to be correct.

  • Some antivirus product will stop sophos from doing its thing. I learned this the hard way...

  • Hi,

if you just want to quickly get your laptop to boot again and you have not encrypted any drive, you can simply recover the MBR by booting from an external medium e.g. a WinPE and enter bootrec /fixmbr

This will write the original Microsoft MBR back on the disk and your laptop will boot Windows as it did prior to the installation of SafeGuard Enterprise (SGN).

The procedure is also described here http://www.sophos.com/en-us/support/knowledgebase/108686.aspx

You can also format the drive and re-install Windows, that will remove SGN. Obviously you will lose all data during this process. This can also be done if you have encrypted your drive already.

Now, regarding the cause of the issue. In order to secure your laptop and authenticate yourself, SGN boots into a hardened FreeBSD. While all hardware vendors make sure that Windows will boot correctly on their hardware, there might be an incompatibility between your Dell laptop and our FreeBSD operating system. There are some options to tweak this, this article describes all available options: http://www.sophos.com/en-us/support/knowledgebase/107781.aspx

You might want to try these hotkeys before you anything else.

We have summarized the POA hotkey settings required for many models in a file available here: http://www.sophos.com/en-us/support/knowledgebase/65700.aspx

which you can use during subsequent installations.

  • Hello,

Thanks for the reply. I was able to get the system to boot by running the bootrec /fixmbr . After talking with Tech support, it was suggested that we upgrade to the latest version to fix the problem.
