Unable to boot after removal of SGE

I installed the trial version of SGE (ver 6.01) on a Windows 7 test machine to see how the product had changed. The version I have installed on producton systems was older and I am going to upgrade.

Policy editor and client were installed.

The default/demo policy was activated and the system drive was encrypted as expected. I encountered a problem booting after the install (got to agree/decline legal memo screen but no mouse or keyboard functions) which I finally resolved by finding a solution using the hotkeys to switch USB support.

After poking around a bit, I was satisfied and wanted to remove the SGE product. After removing the product via control panel add/remove programs and seeing it decrypt the drive, I was prompted to reboot to complete the process. Everything seems normal so far.

System restarts and now I see nothing. A blank screen once the system boots past the initial bios stage. I see enough to be able to enter bios setup and all appears normal, but once I exit bios setup and restart continues, the blank screen appears.

Unable to use any of the hotkey solutions to resolve it. No keyboard or mouse functions other than the ability to issue a control-alt-delete which starts the cycle again. I have a lovely doorstop now.

Granted it was on a test system (a perfectly functional system that I don't care to spend time rebuilding) and I could reformat and move along, but that is not a good answer. What if I put this on a production system and then needed to remove SGE for some reason? Not a lot of confidence in upgrading right now.

Any thoughts on what to do next?

Lou

  • What order did you remove the software? There should had been about two or three installers that you ran in order to install SGE (pre-install, the client, then the configuration package, and then your policy editor). If you don't uninstall the software in reverse order, it may mess things up. Also, what kind of blank screen are you getting? Is it a white screen? If so, the Safeguard client probably did not come off correctly. If this is the case, and if it's fully decrypted, you might be able to use a windows recovery cd to recreate the windows MBR using the a combination of the bcdedit and diskpart commands.

At my workplace we use the Safeguard Enterprise software, and have never in the past have had an issue uninstalling the software (both version 5.6 and 6.0). Granted, it takes a while for the system to go through it's decryption, but we've never had a system get bricked at uninstall time.
