SafeGuard Windows on a Mac

Hi. I'm evaluating Sophos SafeGuard for a customer and need some more details about the product.

  1. Does the current version of SafeGuard for Mac encrypt the Windows Boot Camp partition as well? I saw release notes from an earlier version that said this was not possible.
  2. Some of the customer MacBooks are Windows-only, there's no Mac-partition at all. For some reason this was originally done by completely wiping the drive and partitioning it again. So it's MBR and NTFS, no EFI or recovery partitions, no GPT partition map. Can SafeGuard Easy be used with these machines? I saw release notes saying that Mac-hardware is not supported but what does that mean exactly? That it's not supported because there's no BIOS or because of the GPT partitioning or for some other reason? If this is the case is there any other solution than to reformat and install SafeGuard for Mac (if it's able to encrypt the windows partition, that is)?

On a side note, has anyone tested will Windows boot and work normally if it's cloned from MBR partition to normal GPT-partitioned Boot Camp volume on the same machine? I would imagine boot.ini or boot loader configuration may need to be modified.

Thanks.

  • Hi,

In regards to your queries, as per SafeGuard Disk Encryption for Mac 6.01 release notes:

Bootcamp + SafeGuard Enterprise/SafeGuard Easy for Windows

Sophos SafeGuard Disk Encryption for Mac supports bootcamp, but SafeGuard Enterprise must not be installed in the Windows partition.

    ---

SafeGuard Enterprise Device Encryption requires hardware that provides BIOS support. As MacBook / Pro MacBook Air / Mac Pro / iMac do not support BIOS but EFI only, SafeGuard Enterprise cannot be installed on those devices. This will fail in a controlled manner due to a flag in the POA configuration file preventing the installation process.

It is also not possible to encrypt the Windows Boot Camp partition with SafeGuard Disk Encryption for Mac.

    Kind regards

    Sabrina

  • Thanks for the information. Any plans to support this in the future? I know CheckPoint and Symantec support encrypting the Boot Camp partition but I'd prefer Sophos.
