Bootloader are getting lost sometimes

Hello,

I have a customer which has about 380 machines with Windows 8.1 and SGN 6.10.

About once a month on one of the machines the Sophos boot loader appears to be missing and has to be recovered.

In that time no challenge response recovery is possible.

I think this can happen from time to time but once a month is too often.

So I was wondering what could cause damage to the boot loader? Is there any specific user behaviour or hardware configuration that increases the likelyhood of bootloader issues?

Thanks in advance!

  • Hi,

the Sophos Bootloader that is required for the BitLocker Challenge/Response, can under certain circumstances be removed (or changed in its order) by Microsoft. Updating a Windows 8 client to Windows 8.1 is a common example.

As of SGN 7.0 there is as service, that checks the availability of the required NVRam entry and repairs it if required.

    Hope that helps.
