Macs Autoregister the WINS name instead of the Active Directory Object.

We are 90% Windows and 10% Macs.  The Windows are fine.

The Mac testing is not going well.  Instead of assigning the encryption information to the AD object, SafeGuard detects the Mac as a new PC using the WINS name (we don't use WINS to my knowledge).

Therefore, I cannot assign policies to the Mac and Mac POA is active and I can only use the admin / password combo for one user.  SafeGuard sees the AD object - but instead of populating the AD object with the SafeGuard information, it puts it in Auto Register.  I can't turn off POA when that happens because I can move the object out of Auto Register.

Is this a bug?  I've opened a case, but I'm hoping someone might have seen this before.

  • We have the same issue and have just taken to setting the WINS to the same as the hostname.

If you get anything from your open call let me know. Would be interesting to know what Sophos say.

  • So are you saying that unifying all of the names works?  We've tried it to no avail.

I should have said, I CAN'T move the object from Autoregister.

  • Hi DC_IT_Manager,

what version of SafeGuard do you use in the backend and on the OS X Client?

To me, this sounds like a registration issue that could occur with OS X Clients in version 6.10 and was fixed with the release of version 7.0.

  • I wiped the hard drive and started all over again.  This time it worked.  I think the issue was a 3rd party AD binding agent called Centrify Express.  I had uninstalled it - but it messed everything up.

When I reinstalled Yosemite and bound to AD natively (after first unifying the name of the laptop in WINS and SHARING and BINDING) Safeguard not only installed, but showed up with the correct object in the AD tree in the Safeguard Management Console.

  • Chris:

If you could see my other post about how to change or add owners to the Mac, I would appreciate it.  Even though I can add a new owner in the management console, it doesn't change anything in the Mac FileVault pre-boot login.  It's always the original user who installed on the mac.

The Mac syncs correctly with the server.

Appreciate some help on this one too.

    Thanks.

  • Ahoi,

SafeGuard Enterprise support a central user (objects) assignment for Windows clients only.

Does mean if you try to do the similar things for OS X clients - this will have no impact / nothing will add for the OS X client.

If you want to expand the list of allowed users you need to login once at the OS X client with the required user account. And if you do this you need to provide once the valid password if requested by SafeGuard Enterprise. After this process is done you will see the new user objects below the user inventory information at the SafeGuard Enterprise Management Center as well.

    Best regards
