I think this would be a very useful feature for Home/SMB users who need an inexpensive backup internet connection and for those who live in areas where traditional cable modem/DSL internet access is unavailable.
Surprisingly, even in 2013, a significant portion of people living in rural areas still do not have access to traditional broadband internet, yet most of those areas have 3G/4G LTE cellular data coverage.
Thanks a lot for the feedback. The feature scope for 9.2 is now complete, so the support for WAN LTE via MiFi will not be implemented. Can you please open a feature request for this at feature.astaro.com.
just to clarify.. No feature request is necessary. UTM already supports using 3G/4G USB devices. We don't put the term 4G in the UI, but LTE is supported, so if your hardware is compatible, it will work. Plug it in, reboot the UTM, and see if its an available hardware choice, when adding a new "3G/UMTS" interface.
I use a Verizon 4G LTE Jetpack (MiFi 4620L) regularly with Sophos.
1) Make sure you enable USB tethering mode in the MiFi's admin console.
2) Connect via USB to your Sophos machine and reboot it.
3) Since the MiFi installs a USB NAD based ethernet device (which is now supported in the current Sophos kernel) you should NOT be configuring it as a 3G/4G interface as no modem is intended to be installed. It should show up as an additional physical Ethernet interface like any USB NIC would.
Your results may vary with the type of USB to Ethernet chipset used in your particular MiFi device, but I've had success with Verizon's.
Thanks all for such great help install tested and wow it works, this is great, Happy days are here again Sophos UTM 9.2 is here so tell a friend happy days are here again.
I have the same Jetpack, but can't get it to work.
When I look in the GUI for the device, it shows the Astaro as being connected.
However, on the Astaro side, I've had a couple of issues:
1 - it wouldn't show the DHCP address, even when I clicked renew (yet, when I went into the Jetpack GUI, I could see it was a connected device - it showed an IP and the MAC address of the port on the Astaro, but it wouldn't show up on the Astaro). So, I gave it a static IP, and the static IP showed up in the Jetpack GUI, but
2 - the link shows "error" (I know the jetpack is working because I had another device connected to it wirelessly, and that worked fine.
