What is EDR?

Question

I am interested in Sophos Intercept X Advanced. 
 As I understand at this time, this is both: Intercept X AND a normal Malware Scanner. But what exactly is EDR? Maybe its Intercept X Advanced with EDR more interesting for me if I understand what this EDR is and whats the difference to "no EDR" Version. 
 I will use this on all Clients behind a XG to replace my Anti Malware Scanner from Kaspersky (I don't like that solution), to have the protection against crypto trojans and exploits and I will use the heartbeat function in the XG.
