Version 9.4 Now Available

Hello everyone,

We have published a new installer for the 9.4 release to sophos.com:

www.sophos.com/.../sophos-antivirus-for-mac-home-edition.aspx

When you download the installer it will upgrade an existing installation to version 9.4, if you are still running 9.2.

New features in this version:

  • Detection and cleanup of Potentially Unwanted Applications (adware, spyware, and certain remote access tools fall into this category)
  • Updated Quarantine Manager user interface
  • Faster and more stable Web Protection filtering
  • Faster boot times due to cacheing of previously scanned system files
  • Compatible with the System Integrity Protection feature on Mac OS X El Capitan (10.11)
  • More reliable updating code when the network condition is less than ideal (you might have heard about this issue in these forums)
  • Numerous security and stability improvements

The detection of PUAs for the On-Access scanner will be enabled automatically. These applications will be blocked from running automatically. Its possible we will detect tools that you are using as part of your daily routine - if so you can “authorize” their usage from the new Quarantine Manager window. You can later undo this choice by visiting the Authorizations preferences panel.

Custom scans can also detect and optionally clean up PUAs when detected. Newly created Custom Scans will also enable PUA detection automatically. Check out the Options tab for each scan definition. If you are upgrading from 9.2 your existing Custom Scans will not be changed.

As of Thursday September 25, 2015 all existing installations should automatically upgrade to 9.4.0.

Thanks from the SAV for Mac engineering team!

  • Bob, it's not just replies to this thread, but replies almost everywhere are slow as molasses, or never.

For this issue, I've had to turn off the On-Access Scanner, in order to prevent these often unpredictable freezes being caused by Intercheck hanging. Can't get anything done when these happen. Disabling On-Acess makes using Sophos pointless.

  • Hello brvx,

in order to investigate this further I need some more information if you have the time. First of all, please send me this InterCheck sample (frank.fen@sophos.com) since the formatting got lost in the forum.

    Also of interest are:

    1) your on-acces settings (archives, network drives, cleanup settings)
    2) the system.log around the time of the freeze/hang

Are there any specific Applications you use that trigger these freezes are are the really "just random"?

  • Hello brvx,

as the user is frankfenn the email likely is similar frank.fenn

    Christian

  • OK will send again to frank.fenn@

Also, sent forwards to bobcook (just got rejected) and a cc to serra.

EDIT: Off topic, but can we have a next page button?  It's a PITA to have to scroll all the way down to the bottom of a page to find some unidentified icon that, only by experiment,  brings one to the next page, and then have to scroll again all the way through the previous stuff.

Also, I have email notifications set, but I'm not getting any.

  • Yep, me too for email notifications
  • Hi . The email is known bug that we believe to have sorted out and we'll get the emails going soon. For now, it's best to use the notification icon at the top right (looks like a bolt of lighting) to get updates.
  • Yes, the [email notification] struggle is real. We're working on getting this fixed asap, because yes. Talk about PITAs.
