Sophos 9 causes Mavericks to freeze

Hi Everyone,

I recently got the top of the line iMac, which I was very happy with.

As I was a Mac user before, I knew which software is great and Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac was one of those.

So I had Sophos installed, from the beginning and over the time I noticed one big annoying issue:

The Mac froze from time to time. Whenever the Mac was running the whole day, it wouldn't survive without a hard-reboot any day.

It always showed the same behavior:

 1. Internet connectivity drops

 2. The beachball begins to appear, when hovering some icons in the top menu bar

 3. Programs that are connected to the internet begin to freeze (beachball)

I can't open any other programs after the Mac is in that state, the only way out is a hard reboot.

One of the last entries in the console after such a freeze is always from Sophos, like:

("Der Vorgang konnte nicht abgeschlossen werden. Defekte Pipe" means "The operation couldn't be completed. Broken pipe.")

I was hoping desperately, that Sophos isn't the root cause for that freeze-behavior. I tried to remove it completely, and then re-installed again - this did not solve the issue. I then completely removed Sophos again, this appeared to be the solution. Sophos is gone, and I'm not experiencing the freezes anymore.

I'm now using a different Mac AV product, not from Sophos (:smileysad: which I'm not too happy about).

So my question: Has anyone experienced the same behavior, is this a known issue?

Another thing I'm not too happy about, is that there are still residues from the Sophos AV on my system.

For example, I'm getting those errors in the console:

08.12.13 15:08:11,860 com.apple.security.XPCKeychainSandboxCheck[1735]: Can't get sandbox fs extension for /Library/Sophos Anti-Virus/Sophos.keychain, status=-1 errno=No such file or directory ext=(null)

08.12.13 15:12:31,672 com.apple.security.XPCKeychainSandboxCheck[1973]: Can't get sandbox fs extension for /Library/Sophos Anti-Virus/Sophos.keychain, status=-1 errno=No such file or directory ext=(null)
08.12.13 15:12:31,672 com.apple.security.XPCKeychainSandboxCheck[1973]: Can't get sandbox fs extension for /Library/Sophos Anti-Virus/Sophos.keychain, status=-1 errno=No such file or directory ext=(null)
09.12.13 14:06:40,338 com.apple.security.XPCKeychainSandboxCheck[280]: Can't get sandbox fs extension for /Library/Sophos Anti-Virus/Sophos.keychain, status=-1 errno=No such file or directory ext=(null)

...

And there is a keychain access object, which is read only and can't be removed at all!

I tried everything - also from /System/Library/Keychains I can't remove it, as it's not listed.

Does anyone know, how to remove those leftovers?

Many thanks & best regards,
symt

  • Same problem here. Console error message just before having to hard-reboot:

    6/18/14 2:55:16.600 am SophosWebD[85]: <SMENode: 0x7fe131444fb0> localNode csc:1ERROR! encountered an error while writing to outputstream| error:Error Domain=NSPOSIXErrorDomain Code=32 "The operation couldn’’’’t be completed. Broken pipe"

  • It seems like there's a couple of different problems going on in this thread. The more common seems to revolve around the "10 minute lock-up", which after some experimentation on my own system I'm convinced is due to an interaction between Sophos and local Time Machine backups.

I've been seeing these lockups on my laptop (a late-2013 MacBook Air) for quite some time, but the problem had gotten quite bad around the time I switch email clients to Thunderbird. As of three weeks ago, I was experiencing upwards of 6 lockups a day. In frustration I switched from Sophos to Avira, but found that the lockups persisted (albeit with a three minute duration) in that software. This behavior convinced me that what I was seeing was some sort of time-out issue - probably due to a bad interaction between Time Machine's local backups and Sophos that was exacerbated by the presence of large, frequently changning files.

To test this out, I reinstalled Sophos and made sure not to change any of the default settings. Instead, I disabled Time Machine's local backups using

    sudo tmutil disablelocal

in the Terminal. In the two weeks since disable Time Machine locally, I have experienced zero problems. To confirm this, I ran

    sudo tmutil enablelocal

today to enable Time Machine's local backups... And almost immediately experienced a lock-up lasting exactly 10 minutes.

If you're experiencing lockups that always last 10 minutes and seeing errors related to backupd in your system logs, hopefully you'll find this trick handy. I also hope that these observations may help someone at Sophos (or Avira, as they seem to be effected as well) diagnose and fix this bug. Perhaps doing so will also either solve or shed light on the other problems folks are having on this thread.

  • Don't you also think this might be an issue related to Chrome browser?

    :1018039
  •  Thanks for your help. To be clear, your solution disables local disk backups only, however Time Machine will still backup to its external drive, correct?  [as in support.apple.com/.../HT4878]

    :1018041
  • Happens on Safari as well.

    :1018043
  • You're right. Firefox as well. Forgot

    :1018045
  • Correct. Only local backups are disabled by sudo tmutil disablelocal - backups to external drives will continue to work as expected.

  • A couple of days ago I stopped on access scanning  and did not have any freezes. I hoped for a solution in this forum.

About 6 hours ago I decided to turn on On Access scanning and within 30 minutes I had a new freeze, so I disabled On Access again.

I have seen in this forum others having problemms with Sophos and Safari and Firefox as well, but I have not experienced any conflicts with other browsers than Chrome.

In my case most (or all?) freezes seem to happen when I can find these entries in Console: All Messages

    19/06/14 08:53:45,727 com.sophos.intercheck[72255]: Issue: Could not scan /Users/dagge/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome/Default/Session Storage/014409.log
    19/06/14 08:53:45,727 com.sophos.intercheck[72255]: An unexpected error occurred

I then excluded  /Users/dagge/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome/ fom the On Access scan.

I have not had any freeze now for the last 5 hours. (I will report back if anything changes for me

Hope that this could be of some help to other users or to Sophos programmers.

  • Unfortunately, disabling local backups didn't work for me. I'll keep my fingers crossed for a solution soon.

    :1018051
  • : I think it only works if you're seeing errors in your system logs related to backupd. There's definitely at least two or three other issues with similar symptoms people have been experiencing on this thread.

It sounds like some folks have had luck excluding their browser cache directories from the scan, so you might also try that.

    Good luck!
