Safeguard 6.00.1 Client Upgrade Keeps Trying to Reinstall Itself

An upgrade to Safeguard 6.00.1 keeps trying to reinstall itself on one of our computers.  It appears that the client has been updated and it reports itself as being 6.00.1, but whenever the user reboots the computer, eventually the upgrade gets launched again.

Any ideas on how to stop this?

    Hi Rodrigo,

Sorry for the delay in coming back to you.

I suspect there's probably something that's got corrupted along the way, I would suggest this:

    • Uninstall the Config, Client, PreInstall (reboot now only)
    • Run a chkdsk C: /F /V /X and a defrag of the hard drive
    • Reinstall
  • Thanks ever so much for getting back to me!

If I go ahead and uninstall Sophos, doesn't it have to go through and decrypt the hard drive?  This can take a lot of time, can't it?  I'm just wondering about how long it might take so that I can plan to do it when I don't need the computer for a while.

    Hello Rodrigo,

    Yes, typically 8-12 hours.

Just leave it decrypting overnight, but ensure that you:

    - Keep it plugged in to the mains
    - Set all applicable power options so the machine doesn't sleep / hibernate  turn off

    Hey buddy,

Did you get this resolved in the end?

  • Thanks for checking in on this again.

No resolution as of yet.  I was going to reinstall Safeguard to see if that would take care of the issue, but we no longer have access to the version 6.00.1 installation files, so that's not an option anymore.

I don't really have a good time to uninstall everything and then go through a reinstall under version 7, so will just have to live with it for the time being.

I appreciate the support that you've provide thus far though.

  • Just to bring this to resolution, I thought I'd share the latest information with you.

A couple of days ago, I had to reinstall Microsoft OneDrive and we also got an update to Microsoft Office.  Since these two events occurred, I haven't had any further instances of Sophos Safeguard trying to reinstall itself.  I can't explain why one or both of the installs fixed the issue with Safeguard, but they did.  I have to assume that one or the other reset something in the Windows installer app and cleaned out whatever was left behind by Safeguard.

I can't tell you how nice it is to have my system back to functioning normally!  It was getting very tiresome having to cancel out of the install regularly throughout the day.
