Startup Performance

Hello,

Is there a way to optimize the time required to reach the POA screen?  It takes a bit longer than I would like (20 to 30 seconds) to reach the POA screen.  I'm running Dell E6410's with 4GB of RAM with SG Enterprise client 5.50.8.13.  Thank you.

  • There's a significant performance increase with 5.60, especially on a multi-code machines and when "fast initial encryption" is used. POA is not any faster, but overall disk reads and writes are much faster compared to anything < 5.60.

  • Just want to revisit this question again.  we've upgraded to version 6 and there's no improvement on startup performance.  In fact, the time take takes to get the POA screen to load is longer than it takes to get Windows 7 to load now that we are running SSDs.  I'm certain Windows 7 is more full featured than the POA OS.  It would be great if someone from Sophos could comment on this.  It would really be great to be able to choose from a basic or full featured POA during the deployment process.

  • Hi dcarfan,

as part of the new strategy we leverage the OS embedded encryption engines on Windows and Macs. While doing so we use the advantages of the OS embedded encryption engines which usually show less hardware compatibility issues and the best possible encryption performance and embrace them with our rich management and recovery capabilities.  Due to that, there are currently no plans to add a basic / lightweight version of the SafeGuard Pre Boot Authentication.

For the current SafeGuard Enterprise versions, if you do not use any USB smartcard readers / tokens at the POA, you have the possibility to turn off the USB support at the POA level.

On most hardware, this does not affect any USB keyboards or pointing devices which are connected to the machine. They can still be used at the POA when USB support is switched off (as per default, the USB support is switched on).

You can turn off the POA support via hotkey combination SHIFT+F5 (Details regarding hotkeys can be found in http://www.sophos.com/en-us/support/knowledgebase/107781.aspx),

With USB support switched off the boot time will slightly improve, as the USB kernel is no longer loaded.

    Regards,

    ChrisD
