Excessive data consumption from c.apple.news

I realize this is not a Sophos XG specific issue, but curious if there's any other Sophos XG users out there using Apple products, specifically Apple News. I just noticed yesterday an Apple device on my network went through 72.17 GB to the domain c.apple.news. I'm curious if anyone else is seeing similar behavior or might know what is causing this excessive amount of data usage? Unfortunately I have a bandwidth limit with my ISP so this type of data consumption is a problem (well, I'd say it's still a problem even if I didn't have a bandwidth limit as it seems abnormal).

  • Hi shred,

    over what period of time?

I use Apple news on the iPad and do not see that amount of data.

  • It started yesterday with 72.17 GB used. Today it's up to 29 GB used. I tracked down the device it's coming from to our iMac, specifically my wife's account. She mentioned yesterday she accidentally clicked the News app icon but immediately closed it. When I checked the activity monitor app, I did notice her account had a process running along the lines of News2 (can't remember the exact name). It appears to have been coming from the Apple News widget. Even after removing the widget, the process would show back up so I just restarted the computer and now it seems to not be showing up. I'm wondering if there's a bug with macOS Big Sur with the Apple News widget.

  • Came across this thread on the official Apple support forums. It appears to be an issue with iCloud syncing being enabled for Apple News on macOS. It also looks like one person had to completely reinstall macOS. I've disabled iCloud syncing for both of the user accounts on my iMac and will continue to monitor.
