Switching Sophos UTM Home to XG Home

Hi,

I am looking to figure out how to switch from Sophos UTM Home to Sophos XG Home.

About a year ago I requested the Sophos UTM Home license and never installed it.  6 months ago I requested the Sophos XG Home license and installed but it only gave me a 30 day license that expired.

I want to remove the UTM and go with XG.  When I opened up a support case they said this is only for paid customers and that I should do everything through the forum here.

Thanks!

Here is what shows under the licensing portal

  • Hi,

you requested a trial licence not.a home licence. Home licences do expire but not in my lifetime 2999.

Home  users are only supported through these forums, though you will see Sophos staff occasionally interacting.

You will not be able to migrate from the utm to the XG, you will need to start a new configuration. One hint, make sure you tick the routing mode during installation not bridge.

please feel free to ask further questions, though please use a new thread for each subject.

  • Another point is, you cannot migrate a Serialnumber from Trial to Home.

Serial numbers are locked to a system. If you applied a serial you cannot change it.

What you could try, what i actually never did before, you could try to perform a license transfer.

    See: https://community.sophos.com/kb/en-us/126360

But maybe you are faster with the easy re installation of the system and apply the correct serial.

  • Right, that's the state I'm in.  My NUC that was running the firewall failed and so I'm ready to reinstall the software on the device and can put the right serial number.  Unfortunately MySophos account has UTM with Home Use Edition and XG with expired trial.  I suspect there is some rule where you can only have one free Home Use Edition per account.  I have not found a way to remove the UTM from my account.

  • Hi Tyler,

I assume you are using the NUC with VM? XG will not install on a NUC because the NUC only has one NIC and does not support the same range of USB devices the the UTM does.

You will need two NICs to install XG.

  • Hi Ian,

Maybe NUC is not the right term. It's the size of a NUC but designed for firewall uses.  It's got 4 NICs and I have been running Sophos XG on it since February until the hardware failed.  Now I that I have a replacement unit I need to reinstall XG and so I'm trying to sort out how to get rid of my UTM home license (which I never used) and instead have my XG serial number be the home license.

    Thanks, Steve

  • Hi TYler,

to create the UTM licence you must have logged into myutm, to create a XG licence you log into mysophos.

So, i suspect that you have logged into the wrong portal.

  • I was optimistic this could have been the problem but it looks like it was not.  Here are the steps I followed:

    1) I started by filling out the details on the XG Home form (https://secure2.sophos.com/en-us/products/free-tools/sophos-xg-firewall-home-edition/software.aspx)

    2) I received the email which includes the text (Thank you for your interest in Sophos XG Firewall. You’re receiving this message because this email address was recently used to request Sophos XG Firewall Home Use Edition.)

    3) I went to the Sophos Licensing Portal (https://secure2.sophos.com/en-us/mysophos/my-account.aspx)

    4) Selected Network Protection

    5) Selected Register device

    6) Entered the serial number just received in my email and my info.

    7) Upon which my Confirm Registration shows the serial number I typed plus Product Type UTM and model SF01V.

Something appears to be out of whack where I am getting Sophos XG Serial Numbers that are somehow getting mapped to Sophos UTM. I am truly perplexed.

  • Hi,

no, what you are seeing is correct, the XG is also called a UTM so when you build your XG and apply your licence it will synchronise with XG licensing system.

UTM is a semi-universal name to a generation of firewalls.
