Sophos Web Appliance WS1000

Hi all

I recently purchased a couple of Sophos web appliances which were from a company which went into administration, hence I do not have password, pin code or activation information available. I have tried without success to buy new licenses for the appliances direct from sophos due to the lack of the aforementioned information. Can anyone tell me whether or not it is possible to install an alternative linux operating system on the appliance then install sophos software which would be appropriate to it's use and which software I would need to purchase. I honestly don't know why Sophos are being so awkward about providing new licenses but there you go. I guess they like to force people into buying brand new web appliances.

Any help anyone can offer for a solution to either purchasing a new license for these appliances or for installing an alternative linux OS would be appreciated.

cheers

Andy

The Sophos Appliances should have a SERIAL number located on a sticker on the rear of the units; usually starts with NNG, or close to that.

Having said that, I suspect that these units are now out of waranty; our devices ship with a 3 year return to base hardware replacement warranty.  The WS1000's are no longer sold and have been replaced by WS1100's - better hardware all over.

Using out of warranty hardware appliances could be risky if they fail on you - hence why we'd prefer you to go new pieces of tin.

Having said that...  Having the physical appliances still means you need to license YOUR user base.

If you're dead keen on the Sophos Web Appliances - and hey, I might be biased, but they're awesome!  Roaming mobile web filtering using the Sophos Cloud - then you should ping your local sales office or Sophos partner.

We now have virtual appliances and very tight knit integration with our endpoint technologies.

As for the devices you've procured - if they're out of warranty they could be used for anything other than Sophos Web Appliance software.
