Puremessage does not check inbound emails. I have QSS pop3 connector. Please help!

Hi,

I have exchange 2010 running on server 2008. My server pulls the emails from an external pop host using Quantum QSS pop3 connector.

The puremessage scans the dstastore for viruses but no spams are being blocked. In the activity window thereis no activity what so ever.

I have added the server IP address to the trusted relay but no luck. Please suggest what to do?

Thanks

  • Hi,

Just to confirm: did you add the local Exchange server's IP address as an Upstream Trusted Relay as indicated in this Support article: http://www.sophos.com/en-us/support/knowledgebase/30487.aspx?

Then, within that list of relays, are only servers that accept SMTP traffic listed there? Firewalls shouldn't be listed there unless they actually respond to the HELO command. Care should also be taken with natted IP addresses to make sure that what PureMessage sees in the email header matches what's in the relay list.

PureMessage determines that a message is in the inbound direction in the following order (which is listed in Appendix C of the setup guide):

    1. whether the recipient domain is on the configured mail domain list (if not, then the message is outbound)
    2. whether the sender's IP address is external
    3. whether the sender's IP address is internal and on the list of trusted relays

If the trusted relay list matches the above criteria, then the next step would be to look at the message headers of the spam that came in to see what IP addresses were recorded as the message arrived.

One other area to check within the PureMessage configuration is the Allowed Specific Senders List under the spam policy. Make sure that the sending domain isn't listed there as entries in this list skip the spam scan.

  • I've checked the settings and the exchange IP has been added to the trusted relay (Both locan and public IP).

The accepted domain is also listed.

There is still no activities in the SMTP scanning report.

Please help! What else can I do?

  • At this point, then we would need to take a look at the message headers of one (or more) of these spam messages to see which IPs the email passed through along the way and then compare them with your PureMessage configuration. The lack of information in the SMTP Scan log could point to the message being considered internal.

If you haven't already spoken with one of our support engineers, you should open up a case so we can investigate more closely how Puremessage is configured and how your Exchange environment fits around it. Copies of these messages would be needed along with the list of trusted relays, so when you either call or email in, make sure you have those prepared.
