Rebooting a RED to fix State Up, Link Down Problem

I'm maintaining a network with an SG135 at the home office and a RED 15 at a remote location. Every month or so (last time was last night) the RED will go to State Up, Link Down. Generally power cycling the RED will reconnect it as it did this morning. I'd like to be able to remotely reboot the RED without having to wait for someone to physically unplug it. Can this be done via SSH or some other way? I did have access to a computer on the network where the RED is so if SSH'ing into it is an option, I can do that.

Thanks

  • Hi Jeff - it looks like this is the first we've seen you here - welcome to the UTM Community!

    Yes, I would get Sophos Support involved as this unit may be failing in an unusual fashion.

    Please let us know if the following done as root at the command line successfully restarts a good connection:

    killall red_server && red_server

    Cheers - Bob

  • Thanks, glad to be here.

    I've never used any configuration other than the web interface so I have 2 questions.

    1. Is this command line issued over SSH connect to the UTM or the RED?

    2. Your command line shows red_server. Is that a placeholder for my RED device name or do I literally type red_server?

  • Good questions, Jeff.

    1. At the command line of the UTM.

    2. Just copy and paste the command as written.  This restarts the RED services without powering the UTM off/on.

    Cheers - Bob

  • I know this is a bit old but this has happened again. I went to run the "killall red_server && red_server" command but I can't find "the command line of the UTM". How do I get to that?

  • I like to use PuTTy to ssh to the command line.  It's a free download and there's a description in the UTM KnowledgeBase on how to use it: Sophos UTM: How to access the UTM shell via SSH using PuTTY.  Download PuTTY from this link
