Sophos Connect on macOS: Failure import connection

Hi all,

I updated our virtual test-UTM to the latest V9.711 and tried the new Sophos Connect client on macOS because we have a few customers with Macs.

When importing the config-file (.ovpn) from the user-portal I get this error (my translation):

"Fehler beim Importieren der ..." (Error on importing the ...)

and in the events

"Die Verbindung konnte nicht geparst werden - unbekanntes Format" -> (the connection could not be parsed - format unknown)

Could anyone reproduce this errors?

Is this a bug in the Sophos UTM config generation or in the Sophos Connect client or something else?

BTW the same config-file works without a flaw in Tunnelblick, but for good reasons I don't want that user have to use third party software.

Sophos Home UTM (virtual): 9.711
Sophos Connect for macOS: 1.4.634.1015
macOs: 11.6.5 (Big Sur) an Apple M1
VPN-settings: SSL, UDP/21194, AES-128-CBC/SHA1/2048, comp-lzo

  • In the meantime my case got escalated at Sophos Support. Here are some results:

    • the Sophos Connect Client do not support SSL VPN on MacOS (x86 & ARM), as well as Windows ARM, Android, & iOS: Sophos Connect client: Compatibility with platforms
    • Sophos will not change the headline ("IPsec VPN and SSLVPN client, available for Windows and Mac.") or add a disclaimer that would alert SSL VPN MacOS users about the limitation on there SophosConnect download site
    • Sophos instead recommend OpenVPN (or sometimes Tunnelblick) as a workaround on MacOS
    • the current Sophos Connect Client for MAcOS (1.4.634.1015) is from 2019, I see no intention to fix this issues in the near future, instead Sophos suggest to vote for a feature request

    Its just a shame!

  • Hello and thanks for your post.

Besides the OpenVPN client is there any other (paid) client in order to enable IPSec remote access on macos [ARM]  to sophos XGs ?

    Regards,

    Thilo

Yes, UTM, not XG.  You will want to post your question in the Sophos Firewall Community.
