System Log for Hung Process / Crashing?

My Sophos box ran great for a little over a month, but over the last five weeks, it's continually locking up. I turn the monitor on and find the console frozen, and have to power cycle the box.

The machine I'm using (Dell OptiPlex) has built-in diagnostics which all pass without incident.

Are there any logs that will help me determine what is running, or hung, when the system crashes? I feel like this is software / update related, but I'm not sure where to start looking.

  • If you have  at least 4 GB of RAM, then check the system log.  If possible, start top at the commandline and then report back what you see when your system locks up.
