Add SSH users

Is it possible to add users that can log in using SSH? I have created additional users but I cannot get the SSH settings right.

  • Hi, and welcome to the UTM Community?

Why do you want to add linux users to the UTM? Instead, why not have each person use PuTTy with an RSA key created with puttygen - all free?

  • Hi Bob,

We're trying to use another application to pull information from UTM; network information, serial number etc. We'd like to create a separate user for this purpose with very tight permissions. Creating the user was easy, but I can't log in using SSH. I've tried a bunch of settings with no effect. Is there a built in security feature that prevents SSH access for other users?

    Thank you for your help.
  • It sounds like you have paid subscriptions. In this case, you would not want to risk losing support because you'd made changes like the ones you're suggesting. What specific items do you need other than the two mentioned above?

    Cheers - Bob
PS Yes, I don't believe you can add a user with the privileges needed to get what you want.

  • Does this still work? community.sophos.com/.../59888

Aside from the support related issues with adding users there are also security considerations: what is your confidence level that a local shell user cannot elevate privileges or otherwise gain unauthorized (or unexpected) access?

It may be better to push the data from the UTM than try to pull it from another system.
