How do I release my Verizon FIOS DHCP external IP address?

I'm moving my UTM9 to new hardware. I'm on Verizon FIOS and I want to release my WAN-side IP address provided to the old device so that my new device won't have to wait for a new IP address. Since there is only a "Renew" button in the UTM web interface, I'm using the root shell instead.

I ran:

chroot /var/chroot-dhcpc /usr/sbin/dhclient -r eth1

It didn't error out, however also didn't seem to release the IP address (ifconfig still has a WAN IP and I still have connectivity).

Is there something else I need to do to make sure that Verizon's IP is released before switching out the old box for the new?

Reboot the ONT should do it.

No luck - it didn't work last time I upgraded a few years ago, either.

Unless there's more to "rebooting" the ONT than disconnecting the battery terminal and the wall plug to remove power for a few minutes?

[I don't see any other means inside the ONT cover to reset it]

After swapping in the new router it stays "eth1 state Down" (I waited about 30 mins). I switched back to the old router and it gets an IP immediately.

There's a specific button on Verizon's Actiontech interface to release the DHCP IP, and I remember having to use that when I decommissioned the AT to put my first UTM in its place. Shouldn't I be able to do this from the UTM root shell?

Try putting the same MAC address on the UTM's eth1 as the other router has on its WAN port.
