Reset password does not work?!

Hi,

I have "lost" the password to web-admin for one of our Sophos UTM 9.3 boxes. I have tried to reset the password with the "cc system_password_reset" command, but it does not reset the password.

I have testet the "system_password_reset" command on another 9.3 box, and it does reset the password when I log in to the webadmin.

The only difference on the two systems that I can think of, is that the the SuperAdmin username has been changed from admin to something else on the system where I cannot reset the password.

Do any of you know if the system_password_reset only works if the user is named "admin"

If this is the case, is it possible to change the username from the command line?

Any help is most appreciated [:)]

  • Hi, PH, and welcome to the User BB!

Do any of you know if the system_password_reset only works if the user is named "admin"

That is correct.  There's no quick-n-easy way to reset another password.

Once you have done the reset as root at the command line, you will be prompted to enter a new password when you next try to login to WebAdmin as admin.  You can then change the password for your user name.

    Is that what you needed?

    Cheers - Bob

  • I've been through the steps to reset the password for admin.
    login via console to root
    cc
    RAW
    system_password_reset
and changed the password via the web interface
but it still won't let me login. I get an invalid userid or password sort of error.

Is there anything to do besides reinstall.
This happened after updating my UTM through 9.3.15, 9.3.16, to 9.3.17 as a single update..

    Any suggestions?

  • Bill, instead of the reset, try cc passwd BT1234567*
Then login using that new password. If that didn't work, then something unusual has happened. In that case, you'll want to install anew and restore from a configuration backup.
