Hi Everyone,
I have an issue moving UTM Home to a new VMhost. I get connection drops when surfing from LAN to WAN. i will try to list system specs and the stuff i have tried below, i will try to keep it a short and clear as possible. I cannot wrap my head around this one. Been looking for over 12 hours for a solution and came up empty. I'm hoping to find some help/tips here.
So i have one old VMhost (old rack server) wich i replaced this week with a more recent, allot less noisy desktop VMhost. The old one ran the UTM since january this year without any problem using Hyper-V. The new server allso uses Hyper-V.
Specs old VMHost:
Intel Xeon E5405 @ 2Ghz
16GB RAM
2x Broadcom BCM5708C NIC 1000Mbit
2x Intel Pro/1000PT NIC
OS: Server 2012R2
Specs new VMhost:
Intel Core i5-4460 @ 3.2Ghz
16GB RAM
1x Realtek PCIe 1000Mbit NIC
1x Intel Dual Port Pro/1000PT NIC
OS: Server 2012R2
Networks:
WAN: 192.168.1.0/24
HomeLAN: 192.168.2.0/24
SecureLAN: 192.168.3.0/24
WiFi: 192.168.4.0/24
FW interfaces:
WAN: 192.168.1.254
HomeLAN: 192.168.2.1
SecureLAN: 192.168.3.1
WiFi: 192.168.4.1
ISP router interface:
LAN: 192.168.1.1 (set as def GW in UTM)
WAN: DHCP from ISP
In total i hosted 5 VM's wich all moved to the new VMhost. Only the UTM has issues. The UTM was exported on the old vmh and imported on the new one, so no changes to settings were done(exept WiFi and SecureLAN share 1 physical interface, where securelan is untagged and Wifi tagged VID40.
On the new VMH, When surfing or pinging from LAN to WAN, i get connection drops to the ISP router LAN interface. When surfing, sometimes after the timeout the requested page comes through, sometimes it timesout, so connection drops are not consistant.
I tried the following:
-Connect laptop to ISP router and surf directly from there -> No connection drops.
-Put another VM on the new VMH in the 192.168.1.0/24 network -> No connection drops.
-Clean install UTM(Version 9.351-3.1) on new VMH and restore config -> connection drops
-Clean install UTM(Version 9.351-3.1 and 9.401-11.1 on new VMH, blank config exept for LAN and WAN interface and Mascerading NAT from LAN to WAN -> connection drops
-Create new VM and copy over VHDx (so no export/import) to eliminate issues with virtual NIC's by importing the VM. -> connection drops
-Change interface's to other NIC -> no difference
-Allthough the dual NAT never gave me any problems before, i tried setting up my ISP's router as PPPoe passthrough modem and configure WAN interface of UTM as PPPOE interface but this would not work.
I cannot find any errors in the UTM log or my ISP router log, so this doen't make it easyer to solve.
I tried allot more and all the before multiple times in the past 3 evening i wasted on this, but i cannot remember everything right now because of the frustration this is causing me :)
Since connecting a VM right to a WAN vswitch works flawlesly i have to assume the problem is related to the UTM or the NIC drivers in hyperv, but besides on the new VMH being a dual NIC card instead of 2 single ones, the type of chip is identical so i dont think its the drivers. Allso driver issuese should give problems in other VM's as well.
Currently i reverted back to the old VMhost for the UTM only because i'm a bit tired of trying to fix it. In the meantime all hint, tips and solutions are very welcome. I will try the out as soon as i find time for it and report back. If you need any additional info please let me know and i will provide it.
