Thanks for your reply. That sounds pretty complicated by the way - it's not possible to just enter/upload my Home Use License into an out of the box SG125(w)? 

Losing the lcd-display does not worry me too much. Is this the only disadvantage? Perhaps I'll have over 50 IP's somewhere in the future in my LAN, will I be able to switch to a regular full-guard subscription at that moment?

Nope, it will refuse to accept the Home license with an install done using the hardware image.  

It's not complicated at all.
-  download software image from ftp
-  burn to disk at low speed
-  use USB cd/dvd connected to SG125 with disk loaded, power on SG125, and install away.

There is a way to make it work using the hardware image by modifying files, but if you're not versant with linux shell, it would be more complicated.

Yep, that's the only negative.

Not quite.  You would need to take a config backup, Reinstall using the hardware image, apply your config backup, then it would accept the paid SG125 license.  

If this is just for home use, to be blunt, you can put together a much more powerful (future proof) system by building your own for the same cost as a SG125.  Sophos builds their appliances (as do competing companies) to have little more than the minimum specs for a particular size network.  This is to increase profit margins.  The only advantage the appliances have are the number of network ports.  Eight ports is going to be overkill for most home networks, just buy a cheap switch for your LAN devices.

Yes it is for home use only, and you are correct. I'm trying to figure out the right hw-config in a separate thread.

The only thing I was worried about was - as you mentioned - the number of network ports on an appliance like the SG125 (8) vs. the DIY-option (2). I have a lot of UTP cables running through my house so using the mentioned dual-NIC pc would require me to buy an additional switch which is a less clean setup than just buying an appliance imo.

However: I did not know, that Sophos (and other) appliances have just a little more power than minimum specs. In case of the dual NIC pc, I can of course chose an i5 (or even i7) setup with 8 Gb RAM which is much more future proof.

The wireless on the SG won't work before upgrading to V9.3.  In earlier versions, you could

mv /etc/asg /etc/asg.bak

to be able to apply your Home-use license.  That works in 9.210 and before.

Or that the Wireless won't work if doing so?

I don't know, Barry.  I had just found out that "cc get_objects_filtered" no longer works in 9.3, so I wanted to be careful.
