Reclaim free space from UTM VM

I'm running the UTM VM appliance on ESXi 5.1, and there's a mismatch regarding the disk usage between the UTM and ESXi. Specifically, the UTM claims to be using 7.1 GB total, while ESXi is reporting that it is using 32.7 GB. Note that the virtual disk is thin provisioned, with a maximum allocation of 50 GB.

I've included captures from the UTM and ESXi below.

Any suggestions on how I can correct this? Thanks for your help.

/root # df -h --total
Filesystem      Size  Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda6       5.2G  2.3G  2.7G  47% /
udev            501M   72K  501M   1% /dev
tmpfs           501M     0  501M   0% /dev/shm
/dev/sda1       331M   14M  300M   5% /boot
/dev/sda5        17G  4.1G   12G  27% /var/storage
/dev/sda7        22G  678M   20G   4% /var/log
/dev/sda8       1.3G   17M  1.2G   2% /tmp
tmpfs           501M   20K  501M   1% /var/sec/chroot-httpd/dev/shm
tmpfs           501M   80K  501M   1% /var/storage/chroot-reverseproxy/dev/shm
tmpfs           501M   80K  501M   1% /var/storage/chroot-smtp/tmp/ram
total            47G  7.1G   38G  16%

  • I'm not deeply familiar with vmware...i would search google to find a way to reclaim unused vm space.  In hyper-v you shutdown the vm and use the compact function...i don't know what the procedure is for vmware.

  • I've tried a few things, but I can't seem to get anywhere. At this point I think I'm just going to build a new VM and start over. That seems a bit silly, but I don't really see any other option.
  • You may have thin-provisioned the VM, but I don't think the UTM's installation program formats in a way that respects that.  Please let us know if building a new VM changed the usage.

  • I can't say in vmware but UTM DOES work with thin provisioning inside of hyper-v/

  • To close this off, I ended up building a new VM and restoring from a backup. Given how easy it was (I actually did it twice in about 10 minutes), I probably should have just done that in the first place.

The root cause of this problem was that the storage on the host was overprovisioned, i.e. I had allotted more than the total available storage space to the various VMs. When I originally set up the UTM I had allocated it 50 GB (thin provisioned), and even though the guest thought it was only using 7 GB, the actual disk space consumed had grown to 32 GB. As noted above, this likely has to do with the way that the VM frees space when files are deleted, and how ESXi sees this space.

Even this would have been fine, had I not created other VMs on the host that had eaten into the space and led to the overprovisioning. Once the UTM ate up the remaining free space on the disk, ESXi started pausing the VMs.

I've only allocated 20 GB to my rebuilt VM, so it shouldn't be possible for the same thing to happen again in the future. Thanks everyone for chiming in.
  • My exposure to thin provisioning has been limited to HP, IBM and NetApp.  My theory, although I haven't seen it confirmed anywhere, is that the warning threshold percentage multiplied by the overprovision percentage should be less than 100%.

    Hi,

    20GB is pushing it.

    FYI, minimum recommended is 40GB.

  • Hi all,

I know this is an old post but i've been searching for a way to reclaim unused space on my Sophos UTM VM.
I think the usage grows as the system use storage to index the reporting database and then free's it up again, but at the hypervisor level it never gets reclaimed.

    I've found this out today:
    http://supratim-sanyal.blogspot.ch/2016/12/zero-out-free-disk-space-on-virtual.html

Seach for "Sophos UTM" while on the page.

I'm testing it now, will post an edit.

    Cheers,

    M-

  • The recommended minimum is up from Scott's comment above: 60GB.

It will be interesting to learn the result of your test, Mokaz.
