Reliable PowerEdge SC 440 comes to an end...

Hello everyone

I have been running UTM on the Dell PowerEdge SC 440 for over 15yrs and it finally stop working.  Xfinity bumped my Internet speed to 800Mbps, so I thought it might be time for a new modem (Surfboard Board S33).  Shutting down the PowerEdge and replaced the modem and it never came back on....:((

Anyway, I've posted on here asking for hardware recommendation before about few months ago.  I was about to order from Aliexpress

TOPTON

Mini Router Intel Celeron J4125 Fanless Mini PC 4 Intel i211 LAN w/16GB DDR4 and 256GB SSD for around $300

As I am in need of a new HR, but it will take approx 30 days to ship from China.  Anyone recently order something similar from Amazon that is comparable, since I don't want to wait 30 days.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions

  • Patrick, have you looked at the most-recent pages of the *Unofficial* Hardware Compatibility List (HCL)?

  • I have Bob.  Just checking to see if anyone has ordered anything newer or latest that works with UTM.  It seems a lot of Qotom on Amazon comes with Intel i225-V instead of Intel i211.  Do you know if the LAN card Intel i225 is supported?  Do you recommend quad or dual for multiple active devices?

    Thanks

  • I don't have a clue, Patrick.

Jay Jay commented about it a coupla months ago: https://community.sophos.com/utm-firewall/f/general-discussion/136334/5-upload-speed-on-sophos-utm/505384#505384

    I found that by googling site:community.sophos.com/utm-firewall intel i225 v

  • Intel Corporation 82571EB are really good.  i210 are good.  Stay away from i217-LM, they literally make UTM have a seizure with the connection (up and down every second).

Not a fan of the i225, and of course, anything Realtek, avoid at all costs.

  • "Stay away from i217-LM, they literally make UTM have a seizure with the connection (up and down every second)."....:Grinningunderstood

The box I just ordered comes with i225 no choice.  What's your experience with i225 may I ask?

  • Personally, I think that they don't perform well and have hardware issues coming out of the factory.  Intel, I believe created three revisions of that hardware, and I think it's the third revision (B3) that is worry-free.  Problem is, they have a LOT of the first two revisions integrated into motherboards out there, and there is ample supply of them still around.  If you have the third revision on that board, you should be fine, but they were littered with hardware flaws and issues that created disconnects, packet loss, etc.

  • Thank you so much for posting the third revision (B3).  I was able to confirm the system comes with

    4 x Intel i225-V B3.2.5G Ethernet.

    Thanks again

  • Nice!  Can you link here what it is you are purchasing?  I'd like to see the system.  I'm in the market for a decent VM server; this might give me some ideas.  I like the SuperMicro stuff, but they are pricey and some of their NICs don't play well with UTM or XG - not because of the hardware, but because no one wants to address the NIC Linux drivers.
