Recommended MTU on LAN Interface for VLAN & Risks

Hello,

I'd like to implement VLANs on my existing LAN interface but believe the current 1500 MTU config is too small and have a couple questions:

  1. What is the recommended MTU setting for VLANs?
  2. What are the risks? e.g. hosts must also have MTU > 1500 to participate in VLAN, intermediate "dumb" switches must transparently pass packets larger than 1500.

Thx
