Truncation of rule names/columns : Drives me mad!

Hi there,

Just started to dip my toes so not much to report just yet, however… I must admit there was one bit in the UI I was really looking for in terms of quality-of-life which I’ll try to illustrate with my screenshots. (Not trying to get on my high horse, just being “thorough” with my opinion!) J

Basically the UI doesn’t allow for “long” Rule names, they will be truncated in the views, this seems to be true in v17 as in v16. I was hoping v17 would permit for the full viewing of a longer rule name, but failing that, perhaps the rule description could be displayed in the hover shown on the right:

There’s no way to see the rule description from the policy screen, nor does it appear in the hover, so in order to get a fuller description of the rationale behind a given rule you have to edit it:

It is a similar situation for Group names, but it would appear at least that the description has been made visible from the main UI, with the ability the full text via the hover:

I don’t mind creating logical “short” names for firewall rules, but the hover would benefit from having the description, especially as the hover essentially repeats of information you can already see in the other columns.

I realise you can hover over the firewall rule name to get the full view, but when you are trying to work through large lists of rules it can become tedious to have to keep hovering to see which rule you need to edit next:

Could the “Name” column perhaps not just be made wider? – there’s lots of wasted space in the UI, there are four columns like this:

On a Full HD 1080P resolution monitor (which are commonplace these days, especially for network administrators) you have almost got twice the resolution left to play with in a default XG Firewall configuration, in v17 I have to go to 150% zoom in Chrome in order to “fill” the screen:

150 % Zoom: (image scaled down to 25%)

100% Zoom: (image scaled down to 25%)

See what I mean? Seems barmy to truncate the rule names in the UI/columns when I still have so much screen estate to play with.

Not sure this is something that could be considered for a future release, I understand betas are for bug fixes, not functionality changes.

Thanks very much.

Kind regards,

James Gillies

  • Running on a laptop with 1600x900 and a desktop monitor with 1600x1200.  My system display for text size is ("Make test and other items larger or smaller") is 100%.  Browser zoom is 100%.  Windows 7 with FireFox.

I'm not seeing nearly as much whitespace as you.  On the right side of the table the whitespace is about 20% of the screen.

According to https://www.hobo-web.co.uk/best-screen-size/ the most common resolutions are

    1366x768 17%
    1920x1080 14%
    768x1024 10%

I suspect that your experience is not typical of most of our customers.  In any case you can see on the page there is a definite right edge.  I highly doubt that you will get anything past that in v17.  However to my knowledge in v18 there is a new UI framework.  I promise nothing and I'm not trying to put you off to the future (forever waiting for "the next release").  But maybe as a sysadmin you've managed to snag a kickass monitor setup that the rest of us dream of.  :)

  • Hi,

I am using a mac book pro (2014) running high sierra. FF automatically adjusts the screen area so I have full pages. Initially I commented about the small text and icon size when v17b first started, I was using Safari, FF was having issues.

In Safari I can adjust the overall display size so that there is very little white space and the GUI looks very good. The adjustment stuck when moving between tabs and starting new Safari.

  • +1 for James,

the UI should be responsive and use your entire screen and we should be able to mouse over objects to get more information

  • I don't mind the UI not being responsive, that is a nicety that can be added later, but not expanding truncated values on hover over is unforgivable! It only takes a matter of seconds to code!

  • Seriously? I never would have imagined in 2017 a 1080P monitor would be referred to as a "kickass monitor setup that the rest of us dream of."

  • As a system admin, I had dual 1920 x 1200 monitors. The minimum standard for all PC users was 1920 x 1080.

I use a the small monitors for initial build of a server then move to the GUI on the bigger screens.

So maybe it is time Sophos moved into main stream for its support/development staff. 1920 x 1080 monitors are very cheap and way easier to source than the older sizes.

  • Confirmed, I won't let any of my support staff use less than a 1080P monitor, let alone Sys-admin staff. We also all have triple monitors!

  • In every company I have every worked for Sales, Support, and IT always seems to be able to get the nicest computers.  The two best setups in my development team are a guy who transferred from Support and a new hire.  Development staff often get left behind and get a hardware refresh every 3-4 years.  :)

I'm getting a hardware refresh for new laptops this quarter.  Cross your fingers for me.  :)
