This is really an interesting question, well at least I think so?

I am currently running two XGs one on v17b and the other on MR7.

I can't upgrade the MR7 machine because it is using VLANs.

Both XGs are running the same version of the AP code and both running AP55, one each.

The MR7 XG has 3 SSIDs, two on 2.4ghz and one on 5ghz, the v17b has two SSIDs one on 5ghz and the other on 2.4ghz

Both XG are being used to download the latst IOS version

The question is why does the v17b connect the ipad at >250mb/s while the MR7 connects one iphone on 5ghz at 160mb/s and another iphone at 72mb/s on 2.4ghz?

The printer on its own SSID continually connects at 72mb/s (2.4ghz).

Further question, why does the MR7 version need to be refreshed so the connection values update to higher values becasaue ifl eft on the wireless tab the connection speeds slowly reduce where as the v17b maintains the same connection speed?

I think I can see part of the problem, both AP55s are on channel 36 (5ghz) so there is no check to see if the channel is in use whereas the 2.4ghz are on channels 6 and 11.

Once the ipad finished downloading on the v17b XG the throughput on the MR7 5ghz channel improved.

So, looks like a bug in the AP firmware version not checking co-channel interference?

  • Thank you for reporting your observations .

Max data rate offered for a  20Mhz Single spatial stream capable device on 2.4Ghz is 72 Mbps . This could be the reason why IPhone and the printer are connected at 72 Mbps .

    Some clients prefer 2.4Ghz over 5GHz .

Could you please provide the following information to helps us to debug why the Ipad was connecting at Datarates > 250Mbps(On SFOS 17 Beta)  and IPhone at 160Mbps ( On 16.5 MR7)

    1. Versions of the Ipad and IPhone in use .
    2.  How far was the  client devices from the AP while conducting the tests .
    3. WLAN config /SSID config details on both the Devices .
As you know when the  client moves away from the AP Automatic Rate Shifting / Dynamic rate shifting kicks in and  the data rates  come down.

Are you seeing this issue on the Firewall UI or the Wireless Client Properties of the client card . It would be great if you could provide the model number of the Wireless card in use .

  • Hi,

this might take a couple of responses before all the details are provided.

The iphones and the ipad were all running 10.3.3 trying to upgrade to 11.0.

What I think I have found is maybe congestion/overload possibly faulty with one of the AP55s. All the devices were sitting about 7-8 metres from the APs, I did move them about 1m and that seemed to improve performance. Performance improved on one AP (MR7) after the download on the first one completed V17b). The channels should be 40mhz, but there does not appear to be any place to determine this value?

I think the printer can only handle 72mb/s, I have never seen it go higher.

All references to throughput are from the XG GUIs.

  • Hi,

    AP configuration details as requested.

These two are form the V17b XG

This is from the MR7 XG.

There are two AP55 and 3 portable phones all within 3 metres of each other.
