make sure that XG is able to reach internet correctly (use ping command) and the computer you are using to configure it for the first time, is able to reach internet too.
Instead, if the XG has already been activated and you are not able to synchronize it, you have to contact Sophos.

Reinstalling, as noted in a thread from a year ago, seems to have corrected my issue.
