the via will work fine if you install the a VM of some sort that will accept the second NIC even though it is a USB. USB NICs are not really supported. USB NICs are not really true NICs but require a USB driver to make them work and the range of drivers required is quite large and not used in the production versions of XG. If you want to test successfully then you can add a post advising of your success for future searches.

If you continue using the laptop you will need to connect a monitor and keyboard to setup the XG.

many thanks for taking the time to reply, much appreciated, has saved me no doubt many hours of exasperation.

I would ask that Sophos themselves be clearer in stating the hardware requirements on the homepage for the XG Free version:

https://www.sophos.com/en-us/products/free-tools/sophos-xg-firewall-home-edition.aspx

Having taken them at their word "Intel compatible computer with dual network interfaces" I bought a new USB NIC for the Vaio so it had two gigabit NICs (both work fine under Win10) and duly took the time to download, install and attempt to run XG. Had I known that the Vaio would be a non-starter I would have of course not wasted my time and money. Fortunately I backed it up so I can put it back to Win10 Pro again relatively easily.

I've googled for Sophos XG Free hardware requirements and found much activity on this forum, but what I am not finding is a consolidated list of hardware that is known to work satisfactorily; does such a resource exist please? Would be a help for XG newbies like me.

with thanks & kind regards,

Nico

1/. the device is a laptop with only one NIC.

2/. the XG software does not come with drivers for the onboard display. keyboard etc.

3/. Buy yourself a small PC with two NICs and then try to install the XG software.

anyone ever get to the bottom of this please?

I have exactly the same problem, just installed latest XG on a Vaio VGN-NW240F, keyboard is dead (apart from <ENTER> and <TAB> keys) as soon as it gets to the loader (but fine during successful installation).

I read some people have worked around this by using a USB hub attached keyboard... sadly my USB hub went into the recycling about a year ago having not been used for >5 years :-(

Anyone?

cheers,

Did you ever get this resolved? I have the exact same problem after installing SW-SFOS_16.05.3_MR-3-183.iso . This is on a stock Dell Opti 390. 4G RAM, 250G WD drive.

Installs, plays stupid music, reboot, asks for a firmware loader. Enter works, but nothing else.

Am trying again but with SW-SFOS_15.01.0-376.iso and if that works I will just uptodate the thing.
