Possible to run Sophos XG Home on DEC840?

Hi there,

Is it possible (out-of-the-box) supported to install Sophos XG Home on the desktop appliance dec840 selled by deciso (OPNsense)? It‘s an AMD Epyc Architecture which is also part of some XG appliances, right?

It would give CPU power and fiber 10gbit SFP+ connectivity…

Thanks a lot!

  • Hi,

If it can be 19" form factor, get an used Sophos appliance and use XG home on it. Cheaper and it will work

Note: if using an Sophos appliance you have ether to wipe the whole disk in it or replace the original disk with another SSD.

  • it shouldn't be a 19" model because of the space (however it would be somehow manageable) and especially because of the fans. I have to put the appliance in the living room - probably somewhere below the TV.

  • I replaced the Sophos fans (SG 210) with Noctua, it's really quite. You can give it a try.

  • The thing is 8" wide. It is smaller than my XG115w which probably means the case will run warm.

  • Ian, do you know if XG Home can run SFP+ / 10Gb connections? Seems like he needs 10G interfaces.

  • Yes, it does. I built a test XG which has 2 10gb interfaces. I didn’t connect them but they showed up on the network interface tab as 10gb.

  • Maybe I‘ll have to rethink the whole case. 10Gbit would be nice but not really required from a performance viewpoint. I have the possibility to receive 10 from the ISP, but will use only a part of it (costs the same as the 1Gbit).
But 2.5-5gbit shut it be finally. So I thought best connectivity would be via SFP+. Means the device should have the connectivity but must not be able to fully perform at 10Gbit (I have further reduced the ssl decrypted traffic to a minimum).

  • Hi,

there is a simple solution, take the 10gb and use qos to limit your usage to 2.5gb/s.

Update on 10gb interfaces :- I fired up my test machine and connected the 10gb interface to the 10gb switch port. The interface picked up ip4 and IPv6 addresses very quickly and shows connected at 10gb.
