Install Sophos XG Home on XGS Hardware

Hello all! I am currently running Sophos home edition on a UTM 120 appliance. It's time to upgrade. So I recently purchased a second hand XGS 87 appliance with the hopes of installing XG home edition on it. As expected from reading the installation guides for installing XG home on XG appliances you cannot simply use the Sophos installer to reinstall the image over the existing as it will detect that it's a hardware appliance and want you to use the correct image for that instead, to which the home edition will not work since the serial number doesn't match the home edition license. Long story short, im wondering if anyone has been successful in wiping the hard drive of an XGS appliance to be able to install XG home edition. Since there is no video output, I haven't been able to figure out how to wipe the hard drive using the normal methods available to hardware with a video output. Perhaps there is a Linux version out there that is compatible with a serial connection? Any and all responses are appreciated!

  • Done this multiple times on XG models. Assume XGS are no different.

Problem with Sophos XG units is that if you try booting from a home edition USB, when the boot loader sees a valid OS already installed then boot it.

How do I get round this?

Connect usb keyboard/mouse and monitor via hdmi cable

    boot ubuntu boot disk

from boot menu select to install software

    it will find the disk

from menu delete the disk partitions

once deleted, switch the usb to the home edition and it should now auto install

  • Assume XGS are no different.

Well don't, because they are! There is no video output on XGS models, as mentioned in the OP.

The other way to achieve this is to put a new hard drive in but that isn't quite as straight forward either. I haven't disassembled other models but the XGS116 uses a small form factor SSD (ADATA IM2S3164 M.2 2242) and I don't know how easy it would be to find one of a similar size.

  • I also tried to provide my XGS126 with a Home Edition.
Any attempts have failed because it always finds a HW serial number, even with a new empty SSD.
In my opinion, the Home Edition does not work on an XGS HW.
