Sophos Firewall: v19.0 GA: Feedback and experiences

  • Good grief... 19.x is out and my 18.5 STILL locks up every 2 weeks. Here's a thought.... fix the bugs first, work on features second????

  • Thanks for your Feedback. Do you have a Bug ID?

  • If I am not mistaken this is because they are still using the well tested Linux 4.14 kernel. Until this is updated, some newer cards such as the i225 will not be supported. I too run this on personal hardware and out love support for this drive because of some of the cheaper multi NIC NUCs that are out but I do prefer stability over cutting edge.

  • I think you will find the i225 are in the same classification as i219, home/PC use not server etc.

  • That is correct but I also have read that some of the newer Linux 5.x kernels have the drivers built in for the i219/i225 NICs. Just trying to relay some information I have read on some of these NICs.

  • Brett, I was on here looking for some information myself and have found your above message in the forums in 3 locations now. I recommend submitting a support request as LuCar Toni stated.

I have v19 installed on 5 XG/XGS units at work along with one Sophos Firewall Home installed at home. All of which have been on v18.5.x and upgraded with no issues.

There is most likely an issue with your firewall config or hardware that needs to be diagnosed.

  • 40-50 peak active users on ours with no issues reported. I have worked about 4-5 days myself from home without issue since the upgrade. If I get some time I will try and speed test it next week.

  • Don't get me wrong, support has been reasonably responsive. I'm literally on ticket #4 for this same issue, each time they suggest upgrading the firmware and waiting again. I'm hopeful this last time works, because at least now they have the ability to collect core dumps.

It actually occurs enough, that I have to pay an outside service to monitor my network so that I can drive back into the office every time it crashes.

  • Yeah, I've got several support tickets. Unfortunately the way their ticketing system works, it automatically closes in a couple days, and every ticket ends with them saying to try a new firmware and wait for it to happen. And when I go to create the next ticket after the next crash, I get a totally different person assigned who doesn't know anything again.

  • Our XG 330 is still freezing for about 30 seconds ~ 1 time per week.

This problem even exists in 18.5.

Hope it will be fixed soon. Support has not been able to solve the problem until now.
