Sophos XG Home Edition Limitions on Windows 10 Hyper-V

Hi Everyone,

I'm wondering if anyone has any experiense installing Sophos XG Home Edition on a Windows 10 Hyper-V host?

I've currently got the XG HE installed on a Windows Server 2019 Host and it's working perfectly but I'm in the process of changing host and due to other limitations to do with the GPU my host needs to be Windows 10 (at least for now). When I try to move the internet conncetion to the new host the connection stays live for about half an hour and then disconnects. Sometimes it will stay live for up to 8 hours but it always drops the connection. The only way I've been able to get it back is to restart he VM.

I've tried setting the DNS settings to match my older XG and I've rebuild the XG on the new host as well as on the older host. Newer host drops the connection, older host keeps the connection going with out fail.

Any ideas what might be different, I get that the hardware and the OS are different but I'm hoping for something more speicific.

Please let me know if you need more info I'll get it for you.

    Disable power management in device manager for nic´s and also set your host to never go sleeping ! For me it´s sounds like that : famous problem with Client OS

    Hi n.coker,

    Thank you for getting back to me. I'm sorry I should have included this in my orginal post. I have already set the Power Settings to never sleep and changed the Link State Power Management setting to "off" (see attached image).

    But maybe I'm missing something, as I'm always able to remote into the host and I can keep a ping going to it constantly with out issue but that is using the NIC that is on board the monthboard not one of the NICS from a PCI Express card. Is there a setting speicifically for the PCI Express card that I should be looking at?

    Hi Ian,

    I wasn't 100% sure if you meant in the Sophos XG or the Windows NICS that are hosting the XG so I hope I guessed right.

    Also the WAN doen't currently have an IP because I have the WAN plugged into my old working Virtual XG but normally it has a public IP address populated there.

    Hi,

    thank you, that what the information I was after.

    Al of those VLANs connect without issues, but drop the connections? Next thing to look at is the CPU occupancy of the PC and the XG then have you locked CPU and memory to the XG?

    Yeah it's only the WAN that drops. the LAN/VLANS and DMZ all continue to allow traffic to flow.
    I have not locked the CPU and memory on the XG? Should I? If so how do I do that?

    Hi Jake,

    I would assume via the hyper-v console if it is similar to VMware. The xg software likes to have a fixed ram and CPU resource otherwise it gets confused and starts trying to re-adjust resources with bad consequences.

    Hi Ian,

    Oh you are refering to Dynamic Memory (Hyper-v world). That is disabled for the RAM (see screenshot) and Hyper-V does not support Dynamic CPU, you can only have deticated cores.

    Hi Jake,

    I have never actually used hyper-v, only installed it once as a trial but that was abandoned in favour  of the existing VMware. This is going back about 5 years before I retired.

    Thanks Ian,
    Appreicate you taking the time to look at it for me.

    If I can't work it out I'm going to have to look at giving PFSense a run or maybe looking online for a second hand appliance I guess.

    VMware is free, I have a copy waiting until I can buy a two port 10gb card. I have installed it and it works well. 
    the mother board has two inbuilt ports and one expansion slot and I have a 10gb switch, all experimental stuff.

    Hyper-V has a free flavour these days as well but the only reason I'm using Windows 10 flavour for Hyper-V is because I need virtuallise my GPU with access to the hardware accelarisations and becuase it's a home lab I can't afford a proper enterprise GPU that you can virtuallise in VMWare. So I need to stick with Hyper-V (for now at least).
