XG Home with APX120

Hi All,

for our home I´m looking for a WIFI and Router solution and won´t give UNIFY a go.

AFAIK the XG Home can be used at home for free including all features. Does this also include the management of Access Points like APX120.

If so, what Sophos hardware would you recommend to install the XG image to, also considering updates of the home edition?

 Thanks,

Sascha

  • Hi Sascha,

The hardware you need depends on the requirements. There are already some threats here in the forum.

If the XG is only supposed to be a WLAN controller, very few resources are required.
But that would be a shame, as it is a powerful next-gen firewall with many useful protection mechanisms.

The APX access points can also be managed free of charge via sophos-central without a firewall.

  • Hi,

Some information:- APX120 and the current Sophos AP lineup are only wifi5. wifi6 is not coming until sometime in 2022.

  • Hi Dirk,

    thanks for turning back.

Of course I also want to protect my home network and keep the control of my traffic.

Especially for that reason I my not willing to control my AP from the cloud and like to be more independent.

I like the idea of Sophos to protect and control WIFI as well. At least I expect advantages for roaming, routing and management.

Since we are still talking for a home solution the requirements will not be that high but also should be on the limit - may XG106 would be ok but XG115 the better choice. However, as long somebody can confirm that both can manage AP with the home version I am happy to chose between them.

    Best,
    Sascha

  • Thanks Ian,

i already recognized this but I´m fine with it. From the current perspective even WIFI 5 will be an upgrade :)

    Cheers!

  • You can actually simply purchase the APX and manage them via Central. Its about the Management and this is possible in Central without any license.

You start a trial in Central and after expiration of the 30 days, you can still manage APX and Firewalls in your account for free.

So purchase a firewall, which suits your performance requirements or build a own appliance with custom hardware.

The Hardware of Sophos is not suitable for Home license, therefore you need to "wipe the disk" to install a software installation of the firewall on the hardware. You could also check out custom build hardware on amazon, if those are more suitable for you.

Afterwards the APX will be managed via Central and give the traffic directly to the firewall. The firewall does not care, if the APX is managed in Central or on the firewall.

  • Thanks mate...

...does it mean that the APX is always managed from the cloud even it is connected to the XG or can the XG act as an independent controller? However, I understand that the traffic iwill not leave the local network, does this also cover roaming? How are APX are dealing with  it? Via the controller or do they sync itself among the APs?

    Thanks again!

  • There is no such feature like roaming in Sophos Wireless products. Its working as a Standard in the wireless implementation. So to speak, if the device notice the loose of a connection, it will try to connect with another Access point. That is the fast roaming feature within IEEE 802.11r. There are some vendors building technologies on top, but most likely this standard is sufficient to cover basic network roaming.
