Intel X710-T4L not found by v18.1 installer

Screwed Intel X710-T4L into 'blank' testbench PC to validate network adapter before installing it in my 'live' Sophos Firewall. Sophos v18 home installation runs smoothly to completion (yea!) and reboots and ... does not see the X710-T4L. Error message "Network Interfaces lower than minimum required," and runs in failsafe mode.

My query about compatibility a few months ago was answered encouriginly enough with "The Intel X710-T4L is supposed to use the NIC Driver i40e, which is currently available on v18.5 MR1."

The installer drops v18.1 and without a pair of working ports I have no way to bring up the testbench and update it to v18.5 to see if THAT version sees the X710-T4L okay.

QUESTION: is there any way to update the testbench (in failsafe mode) to v18.5 using, say, a USB drive?

Plan B is to purchase an inexpensive Intel 82576 dual port NIC, bring up the firewall, update it to v18.5, and then swap out the dual port NIC for the X710-T4L (accompanied by appropriate prayers).

Cheers,
Bruce.

  • EUREKA, the X710-T4L is working!

Mildly embarrassingly: when I created my install media ~2 weeks ago, the portal has v18.1 for download and that had the problem outlined above. Happily I re-checked the portal and found it now has v18.5 for download ... and that find the X710-T4L seamlessly.

I am putting the NIC through its paces on my testbench, and will install it in my 'live' firewall after a banging on it bit.

While pricey, the X710-T4L is worthy of consideration as it provides a tremendous degree of futureproofing by supporting 1, 2.5, 5, and 10Gbps Ethernet in a single adapter.

    Cheers,
    Bruce.
