XG115 Firewall - Web Filter

I have created a web rule to just blocking Sexual Explicit, Games and Advertisements.

This prevents seeing comments in YouTube because devices (Android) put YouTube into Restricted mode saying administrator has blocked it.

How do I allow the user to see comments while blocking the above?

Also need some help in defining an Exclusion to a specific web address.

    Hey ,

I tried with my Device and with the categories you've mentioned, it doesn't seem to block comments on youtube. On both Android devices and PC browsers.

Could it be that any other rule in that Filter policy blocking it or perhaps the application filter?

You can Navigate to Log-Viewer, Change the module to Web Filter, and search by the source IP of the machine where the comments are blocked. Try to refresh the youtube page (or re-launch the App on phone) and see if there's anything that comes as blocked?

  • Hi Devesh

Thanks for your prompt response. I think the below circled control point may be the culprit that create the restriction.

I have temporarily change the Web Policy to Default Workplace Policy, where we dont have this extra enforcement. Hence my suspicion is that, the circled extra control against YouTube put users devices into restricted mode for YouTube and prevent them seeing comments.

    What is your thought?

    Thanks

    Hi  UJay,

Enabling 'Enforce YouTube restrictions' would not block the comments section. This works as a filter to screen out YouTube videos based on an automated system.

For more information on the difference between Moderate and Strict, see the following link:

I'd also suggest checking web/application filter events in the log viewer.

  • Hi Yash

I have tried suggestions made in the google article prior to unselecting the Enforce YouTube restrictions in XG115. Until I remove the Enforce YouTube restrictions in XG115, I was not able to ON/OFF the restricted mode button on Android (Galaxy) phones. I tried this on 2 different Samsung devices and both had Restricted mode ON and grayed out (which means I cannot change it in the phone settings)

The application policy is filtering only P2P and high risk categories. I have tried Allow All on application policy to confirm that the restriction is not due to the application policy.

    Thanks

  • Hi Yash

    Thanks for your response.

I have checked logs to see whether i can find any but i was unable to trace something saying how it puts Android devices into restricted mode. I also have tried different web and application policies to see where it actually force the end-user device to go into the restricted mode.

Comments (for Youtube) are not visible when the end user devices is in restricted mode. It is not possible to apply guidelines provided in the Google's article 3212415 because the ON/OFF feature is fully disabled at the end user. However, after un-ticking Enforce YouTube restrictions, end user devices automatically switched off the restricted mode without any intervention.

    Best regards
