Will Admin Reset Affect Licenses? Are super admins a role in the XG?

Hello,

We have a Sophos XG that we have been locked out of, but we still have an active license that we don't want to lose.

I found this guide for how to reset the admin password, but I have a couple of questions I would appreciate if someone could clarify for me.

  • A screenshot in the guide above has the text "Appliance registration will not be affected." Can I take this to mean that license registrations will not be affected?
  • The guide describes this as an "admin" password reset process, but does this admin user have full privileges on the device? Is there a "super admin" that we cannot reset through this process?

The reason I'm asking about the "super admin" is because of this page, which turned up in search engines when I searched for "administrator roles Sophos XG."

On the other hand, this page in the online documentation suggests that there is no "super admin" role, but the "admin" role has "super admin" privileges. Is this admin user the account that will have its password reset in the guide above?

  • Licenses are bound to the serialnumber of XG. A reset of the admin user will not affect the license. You can reset the admin via Serial /keyboard/monitor. Via Console (SFOS 17.5). Thats the best approach to reset the admin.

    For the next time, integrate this firewall to Central to get a foot into the firewall, if this happens again.

    Regarding the admin reset, do they have full privileges over the device? Regarding my "super admin" question. Or does a "super admin" role only exist in Sophos Central, and not in the Sophos XG hardware?

  • Each and every XG has one "admin". This user is the superadmin and has access to all webadmin changes and CLI.
