Sophos XG VM (Home Edition) - Dell Wireless 5570 UMTS Card

Alright, so I know, this might sound weird first, but I have the following Constelation:

I'm currently waiting for some Hardware to arrive to replace my fritzbox with a Sophos XG Home and APX120 APs.

Initially I set up a Sophos XG for testing on my ESXi and will keep it for Firmware Testing and Securing the Inet Facing VMs inside. The fun part is, that it runs on a Dell M4800 Notebook, that was lying around and I just found out, that it has an integrated UMTS Card, a Dell Wireless 5570 Adapter.

I enabled pass through in the ESX and connected it to the XG VM. But when I try to enable Cellular WAN, there is just a statement, that there is no modem plugged in.

Is there anyway, how I can look at the console if the VM sees the virtual USB connected? Are there some tricks to get it working and recognized? Or do I have to build a workaround with another VM and forwarding the connection? If so, what would you recommend?

The usecase I have in mind is, that I could use that as a kind of Out Of Band VPN gateway to be able to connect if I'm on a business trip and the Wife has Issues at home.

  • Alright, I connected to console and apperently the VM at least sees the modem. Is there a good guide how to get this to work? I'm frankly new to the sophos world and would really appreciate some help :-D

  • Hi,

you need to enable the device as a LAN in the VM and assign it to the XG. Then restart the XG, it should see the new LAN.

  • Thats the problem atm. The Device is build in to the notebook and I can DirectIO it to the VM. It shows there with the stuff in the screenshot. Is there a cool way to use the UMTS card directly in the ESX to establish the connection and link it to a VSwitch that I missed? That would solve all my issues....

  • Hi,

the setup has nothing to do with the XG but entirely in the VM. I do not have a VM active anymore so I can't teethe connection types.
