Xg 18.0 on UTM425 rev5

Hey guys,

I have the possibility to get one UTM425 rev5 very cheap and wanted to ask if anyone has installed the software Version of XG on that old lady?

Are there any specific hickups? Would love to get from VM to appliance finaly...

And by the way, are the APX120 managable locally with the home version?

Thanks in advance

  • Both should be possible. You have to wipe the Hardware first to get this as a virtual appliance.

  • Alright thanks, so I'll get it and will see...

If the old thing still has an hdd I will obviously use a ssd, if not, I read about formating ssd first... So it should be installable from USB right?

Am I able to run home as a HA cluster? Have another PC laying around, that could be used as backup. Or does it have to be identical HW for it to work?

  • The license will not prevent you to use anything. It will not cover Sandstorm, everything else is included. So you could also run a HA.

Software Appliances simply need the same "size" to run. That means, the hardware should be identically in terms of RAM/CPU.

  • Ok, thanks a lot for clarification. So, if one of them has 8gb RAM and the other one 6 its still the same, cause it only uses 6,right?

And for CPU, its just important to have 4 cores, not how fast they are?

  • Its all about the numbers. GB and cores.

  • Alright, I've read something about interfaces, could this be an issue? Or could I just do scheduled bavkups and restore config from one nachine to another?

My "problem" is, that I have one supermicro 19" microserver with 2xgigabit lying around and wanted to keep this as my spare, when the 425 arrives... But what I've read HA would be a problem, if they have different interface numbers...

So could I just backup config from the 425 and restore it to the supermicro?

It's supposedly only config. But I think I have to at least reconfigure the ports....
