NOOB question

Question

I recently purchased an XG 86. My current config is: 
 Cable Modem -- Linksys Mesh Router -- Switch 
 In this, the Linksys Mesh Router (WHW03) is DHCP server, and supports primary WiFi and Guest WiFi 
 What's the best way to cable/configure a new topology using the XG 86? Is there a disadvantage to using the XG purely as firewall and using the Linksys for routing and WiFi?

Hi Rick, Welcome to the Sophos Community. I think the best way to re-configure the topology is by placing the XG between your modem and Switch. Change the Linksys router to operate in bridge and leverage DHCP from XG. XG does have wireless management capabilities but it can only manage Sophos Access Points. If you don't want to use Sophos AP, Then you can get any other small router and connect to a separate port of XG, Create a custom zone and use it for Guest network. This way Linksys router will serve the primary network and the other router serves the guest network and they'll be totally isolated unless you create a rule to allow the the traffic between these zones. There's no disadvantage of using XG purely as a firewall except you won't be able to manage your wireless network through it without Sophos APs. This way you'll still have one more port free on Firewall which you can use to plug in another ISP (in future) and XG can load balance the traffic and switch to the active one in case of failure Hope this help :)
