Fireware XG450

I have Sophos XG450.  I am new to this device and was trying to make sure my firmware was up to date.

There are 2 versions on the device now.

SFOS 17.0.6 MR-6

SFOS 17.5.5 MR-5 (Active)

When I run "Check for Updates" is say no updates available, but SFOS 17.5.7 MR-7 is shown available for the XG on their web site.

Let me add that I have not been able to log into Support, because my boss can't figure out what email address it is tied to.  So I thought someone here could point me in the right direction.

I appreciate any advice!

  • Hi Dennis,

so, in general, the newest version of SFOS is 17.5.7 MR-9 (SFOS 17.5.9-577).
You have two options to download the firmware manually:

    1. Search for your registered device and download the available firmware here.
The device has to be registered to the SophosID you are logged in with.
    2. You can also check & download the newest firmware for your XG450 by searching for your S/N here.

Sophos sometimes withholds or revokes updates when there have been errors / bugs with certain hardware. These XG appliances will then be updated with the latest firmware a little later. It's best to prepare for v18 directly, which is due to be released as GA in the early quarter of 2020. There will be some new features and performance improvements.

Always important: When updating the firmware (manually), especially on the XG, always think of a backup!

The downloaded firmware can now be installed on the Sophos Firewall step by step:

    1. Log on to your XG firewall.
    2. Click Backup & Firmware in the navigation.
    3. At Firmware you will find a list of available versions. Click the upload icon.
    4. You will then see the "Firmware Upgrade/Downgrade" pop-up window. Select the firmware from your computer and click Upload Firmware or Upload & Boot.

If you have set up an HA cluster, I recommend that you always select the Upload & Boot variant. This way, the two firewalls are updated one after the other and there is no interruption in the network.
