Nic Order during Install - 7 Physical NICs

Hi,

I am installing XG Home on a new computer with 7 nics. (I have one of those server cards with 4 nic ports + a dual 10GbE card + the on motherboard nic) I don't have any real plans to use all those ports, but like, you can't add additional ports after install without XG freaking out, so it's just for future proofing, just in case.

Anyways, sophos install automatically choose port 4 on my 1gbps Nic, as my LAN port. Why?

I want one of my 10GbE ports to be my lan port.

Is there anyways to tell the sophos installer what port I want to be my default LAN port? Additionally the sophos wizard, both in the console and GUI, neither of them show you the mac address of the interfaces it finds. So you literally have no idea what port in the GUI/console matches to your physical ports, without doing trial and error with DHCP.

Am I missing something? Am I just dumb?

  • Hi Paul,

during the installation, there is no way to specify the NICs order. The only way is to use the wizard during the licenze activation to set the WAN and other port. Then enable the https access on WAN and change the lan port with another one on your choice.

Mac-addresses are under the Network UI, under each port. Otherwise use the advanced shell (ssh > menu 5 > menu 3) and type:

    ifconfig

    Regards

  • Actually as far as i know, it depends on the MAC used while installation.

XG will try to sort the MACs and attach the Port1-7 to the order of those MACs.

If you add a interface after installation, most likely it should "not" reorder anything. There are corner cases in virtual environments, which causes that because of the interface types.

In V18 you can rename interfaces etc. So you can start to Name dem properly.

But if you cannot change the Mac on a bare installation, i assume, you cannot change the "Port" Hardware assignment.
